About

Grace Rong Li

Grace Rong Li — international art advisor, independent curator, and author

Grace Rong Li is an international art advisor, independent curator, and author based in Zurich.

Her work is guided by a compass she was raised not merely to admire, but to live: truth, love, and beauty as one creative force — and love as the source of creation.

Three Decades Bridging Worlds

Across more than three decades in the global art ecosystem, and a life shaped by work on four continents, she has built an uncommon practice connecting what modern culture often separates: East and West, market and meaning, the historical and the emergent, the intellectual and the heart.

She has pioneered the international rise of Chinese contemporary art, introduced Western modern and contemporary artists and masterworks into Asian museums and collections, and written on the vital intersections of art, science, and consciousness.

Market Intelligence Meets Philosophical Discernment

Grace is known for a rare combination: sharp market intelligence and deep philosophical discernment — a capacity to see art not only as objects and histories, but as a living force that shapes perception, ethics, and human becoming.

Education: BA, Fudan University (Shanghai) · MBA, Baruch College, City University of New York

Professional: Executive Member, Association of Professional Art Advisors (APAA), since 2012

Philosophy & Roots

Art, Science, and Ancient Wisdom As One Unified Living Force

A Formation Breathed, Not Learned

Grace grew up in a family with deep roots in art, science, and ancient wisdom — where these disciplines breathed as one living whole. Physics, mathematics, music, dance, painting, poetry, medicine, Buddhism, and Daoism were woven naturally into daily life. The union of art, science, and ancient wisdom was not a concept she learned. It was the air she breathed. Her earliest dream was to become a mathematician or physicist; the path turned toward art, but the love of science — its beauty, its mystery, its search for the hidden structure of reality — never left.

The Way of the Brush — Attuning to the Source of Creation

She began practicing Chinese calligraphy and ink painting at age six — almost daily, for over two decades. In the Chinese tradition, calligraphy and ink painting are deeply connected to the source of creation itself — rooted in Buddhism, Daoism, and China's ancient understanding of existence, the nature of reality, and the cosmos. The practice is an intention to attune inner qi with outer cosmic qi, to achieve the union of human and heaven. It trains one to observe nature, to know the self as nature — with presence, consciousness, and devotion.

These are not artistic skills alone but paths of self-cultivation: the disciplined unification of body, mind, and spirit through the brush. Each stroke demands the regulation of breath, the quieting of thought, and the channeling of qi — vital energy — into the living movement of ink on paper.

From Practice to Embodiment

Over years, technique internalizes; intention flows directly through the brush. Over decades, something deeper occurs: the practice ceases to be something one does and becomes who one is. The brushstroke becomes a direct imprint of the practitioner's character, consciousness, and state of being — when you see the work, you see the person. In her late twenties, the formal daily practice gradually gave way to life itself as the practice — but the formation had already taken root.

From One Seed, Infinite Flowering

These contemplative roots opened her inquiry into the wisdom of civilizations across the world — from Egypt and India to Islam and Sufism, Kabbalah, Christianity, and the Indigenous cultures of the Americas and beyond. Her studies move not only through intellectual understanding but through embodied, direct experiencing. Through this journey, she came to recognize a shared essence: at their deepest source, the ancient wisdom traditions arise from one seed — one spring, one tree of life.

Where Art and Science Converge

This is also the ground where true art and true science converge. Both investigate nature — and the Self as inseparable from nature. What the ancient wisdom traditions understood through direct experience, quantum physicist David Bohm confirmed through rigorous science: the universe is not empty space punctuated by matter, but a vast, invisible, energetic ocean — a "plenum" — from which all forms arise as temporary ripples. "Deep down the consciousness of mankind is one. This is a virtual certainty because even in the vacuum matter is one; and if we don't see this, it's because we are blinding ourselves to it."

For Grace, non-duality is not abstract philosophy but a living practice at the root of art, science, and spiritual inquiry: the fusion of timeless wisdom, direct experience, and the cutting edge of consciousness research. Art born from this ground transcends borders of language, culture, religion, race, age, and class — expanding consciousness, connecting us with who we truly are: a ripple in the cosmic ocean, and the ocean itself.

The Living Foundation of New Renaissance Advisory

These roots inform everything: her eye for art, her perception of invisible connections between seemingly separate worlds, her approach to exchange and relationship, and her vision for what culture — and the future of humanity — can become. They are the living foundation of New Renaissance Advisory.

Journey

Three Chapters

I
1997 — 2009

East Into West: Pioneering the International Rise of Chinese Contemporary Art

Grace first became known as the founder and director of Grace Li Gallery in Zurich (est. 2004), one of the early international platforms to champion Chinese contemporary art with curatorial conviction and long-term vision. But her relationship with artists and their creative worlds began far earlier.

Growing up surrounded by artists and scientists, she developed an intimate curiosity not only about artworks, but about the inner landscapes from which they emerge — the studio as laboratory, the creative process as lived experience, the artist and scientist's consciousness as source.

Immersion in the Artist's World

In 1997, initiated by Lorenz Helbling, founder of ShanghART Gallery, Grace undertook an ambitious project: to interview fifty leading Chinese artists for a book mapping the emerging contemporary art movement from within. She immersed herself in studios, processes, and thinking — conversations that moved beyond career narratives into the essence of creative vision and transformation. The book was never published, but the experience profoundly shaped her approach: working not at a distance, but from inside the artist's world, learning how to create contexts that honor the full dimension of a practice.

Building Institutional Foundations in New York

Between 2001 and 2004, as a student in New York, Grace immersed herself in the infrastructure shaping Chinese contemporary art's institutional emergence in the West. She contributed to groundbreaking exhibitions including Christopher Phillips and Barbara London's "Between Past and Future: New Photography and Video from China" (2003) and Barbara London's "The Thirteen: Chinese Video Now" at MoMA (2003), which introduced raw, experimental video works from thirteen contemporary Chinese artists to American audiences. Simultaneously, she began placing works with visionary collectors of the era — Martin Margulius, Michael Lynne, and Arthur Walther — whose collections would later anchor major museum holdings.

Ahead of the Curve

This groundwork — both philosophical and relational — positioned her to build critical international contexts for artists who later became central figures in global contemporary art. By the time Grace Li Gallery entered Art Basel Miami Beach in 2006, she was already ahead of the curve — placing works in major museum exhibitions and collections long before wider recognition followed.

Results That Speak

The results of this early vision speak for themselves. Liu Wei, whose first work as artist Grace placed with Michael Lynne in 2001, is now the first Asian artist selected for The Metropolitan Museum of Art's prestigious Façade Commission (2026). MoMA has presented solo exhibitions of only two Chinese artists to date: Cao Fei and Zheng Guogu — both artists Grace championed from their earliest careers. She placed Cao Fei's works in the collection of Kunsthaus Zurich in 2005, one of the first institutional acquisitions of her work anywhere in the world.

II
2009 — 2021

West Into East: Building World-Class Collections and Cultural Futures

With a firm belief that art is a universal language that crosses cultures and boundaries to connect people, Grace founded her global art advisory in 2009 — now evolving under the umbrella of New Renaissance Advisory — to serve collectors and institutions worldwide.

Her Advisory serves private museums, foundations, high-net-worth collectors, and corporate clients seeking coherent, future-facing collections with intellectual depth and cultural responsibility.

Reversing the Cultural Current

She was among the first advisors to educate and guide Chinese collectors and private museums in building collections of Western modern and contemporary art, reversing the cultural current and expanding the aesthetic dialogue in Asia.

Strategy Meets Meaning

Her advisory work pairs strategic precision — acquisitions, collection architecture, long-term value — with meaning-making: not only what a work is worth, but why it matters, how it resonates across cultures and time, and what kind of future it helps to build.

Landmark Placements

A distinctive chapter of her work has been expanding dialogue between Western contemporary art and Asian institutions.

A landmark example: Grace placed the first edition of William Kentridge's The Refusal of Time (2012) — the monumental five-channel video installation originally commissioned for dOCUMENTA (13) — into the collection of Sifang Art Museum in Nanjing. Subsequent editions were later jointly acquired by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and SFMOMA (2013), and by the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, among others.

Toward the Union of Individual and Universal
New Renaissance Advisory — From Root to Frontier

The root was always there: Art, Science, and Ancient Wisdom As One Unified Living Force — union of matter and spirit, individual and universal.

Through three decades of launching careers, building collections, and bridging cultures, the non-dual ground Grace was raised on — where art, science, and ancient wisdom are one unified living force — was quietly shaping every decision: which artists she championed, which artworks she placed, which invisible connections she perceived between seemingly separate worlds. Over years of deepening inquiry, what had lived in the background moved steadily to the foreground, and then to the center. The content formed first — through practice, research, relationships, writing, and lived experience — and the form followed naturally. New Renaissance Advisory was organically born and unfolding.

Connecting to Root

Connecting to root is not going backward. It is going deepest within — towards the source of creation, with transformation that honors what came before while exploring into the unknown.

Crystallizing a Lifetime of Inquiry

Drawn to the unknown and undefined with a pioneering, experimental spirit, she has crystallized a lifetime of cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural inquiry into its fullest expression: a curatorial and advisory practice at the frontier where art, science, and ancient wisdom converge to illuminate the deepest questions of human existence.

Cross-Disciplinary Convergence

Her current projects draw ancient wisdom traditions alongside neuroscience, heart science, quantum physics, mathematics, biology, architecture, sound/music, astronomy, and consciousness studies, developing frameworks that reveal how visionary artists and scientists have often been investigating the same fundamental questions: the source of creation, the nature of reality, existence, energy, perception, time, space, matter, light, and consciousness.

At the heart of this inquiry are the enduring questions: Who are we? Where did we come from? Where are we going? What kind of future do we co-create — through the quality of our consciousness, values, creativity, and imagination?

Her current project brings these questions to institutional scale — exploring consciousness as creative force through modern and contemporary visionaries in dialogue with ancient wisdom, proposing a new renaissance in which the deepest past illuminates the brightest future.

For Grace, art and science are, at their best, a study of nature — and Self as nature: a transformative living force that restores our harmonious relationship with Self, others, nature, and cosmos.

Visionary Tech Leaders

Expanding vision, sharpening creativity, inspiring breakthrough, grounding alignment

AI, Quantum Computing & the Future of Consciousness

In an age of artificial intelligence and quantum computing, questions of consciousness, perception, and the nature of reality are no longer philosophical — they are structural. The most advanced questions — What is awareness? What is intelligence? What is consciousness? What is creativity? What is the relationship between intelligence and consciousness? What is the nature of reality itself? — are the oldest questions in human civilization. Art, science, and contemplative traditions have explored them for millennia. We bridge these worlds — grounding technological evolution in the depth of ancient wisdom and living artistic practice.

For technology and innovation leaders new to the art world, we offer a complete bridge: building a collection that embodies your organization's deepest values; commissioning works by visionary artists; curating dialogues between your teams, artists, and scientists to expand vision and inspire breakthrough; developing cultural programming that sharpens creativity and grounds innovation in human meaning.

Decades of relationships, knowledge, and strategic vision so you don't navigate this world alone. Art is not a soft add-on. It is infrastructure for seeing clearly, leading with depth, and building what endures.

New Renaissance

Art, Science, and Consciousness

Transforming Crisis into Humanity's Greatest Evolutionary Leap

The first Renaissance revived ancient wisdom through art, philosophy, and natural inquiry — an era of integration in which questions of beauty, truth, and cosmology often shared the same horizon. In the centuries that followed, the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment brought extraordinary advances in method and rational critique — yet they also helped establish a new hierarchy of knowledge, in which measurement and analysis increasingly defined what counted as "real," while contemplative, intuitive, and metaphysical ways of knowing were pushed to the margins of institutional authority.

The Crisis of Separated Knowledge

The consequences are not only technological and ecological, but existential: accelerating power without proportional wisdom. These crises have many causes, yet a shared through-line is the dominance of instrumental reason — knowing as control — over wisdom traditions that trained perception, consciousness, ethics, and inner development not merely as personal cultivation but as the very ground from which reality is known and shaped.

A Frontier Most Have Yet to Name

New Renaissance Advisory works at a frontier most of the art world has yet to name: the living confluence of art, science, ancient wisdom, consciousness studies, and emerging frontier science and technology. We partner with institutions, collectors, foundations, corporations, and artists to build cultural programs and collections that illuminate the invisible architecture connecting these fields — and that reconnect us with the creative intelligence at the heart of existence.

The Birth of a New Renaissance

Our conviction is that we are living through the birth of a new Renaissance — one that integrates what the first left incomplete: the holistic union of body, mind, and spirit. The boundaries between disciplines are dissolving. The deepest questions about creation, perception, and existence are being asked simultaneously by artists, physicists, contemplatives, and neuroscientists.

The cultural programs that matter most are those that make this confluence visible, legible, and transformative.

Drawing on deep knowledge of ancient wisdom traditions alongside neuroscience, quantum physics, biology, heart science, and consciousness studies, we create frameworks that reveal how visionary artists and scientists have always been investigating the same fundamental questions: the nature of reality, existence, energy, perception, time, space, matter, light, and consciousness itself.

At the heart of this inquiry are the eternal questions: Who are we? Where did we come from? Where are we going? What kind of future do we co-create — through the quality of our consciousness, values, creativity, and imagination?

Consciousness as the Heart of Creation

The greatest artists and scientists are not separated by discipline. They are investigators of the same reality — seen through the lens of consciousness itself.

As Max Planck understood: science cannot solve the ultimate mystery of nature, because in the last analysis, we ourselves are part of the mystery we are trying to solve.

There is no outside from which to observe — only Self observing Self, wholeness contracting and expanding from the same source.

The real work is Oneself.

Consciousness is one light — one cosmic consciousness — reflected in infinite forms. When we dive deepest into self, we begin to see Self in everyone and everything. Our relationship with others is, at root, our relationship with Self — called to expand, evolve, and awaken into the larger field of cosmic consciousness.

This process unfolds not only through spiritual practice, but through real life: dealing with everything, everyone, learning, growing, and evolving through relationship and experience. The world is the real yoga mat. We are the world.

True devotion is not only religious. It is devotion to our mission — what we came here to do, with the gifts we have been given, in service of the whole.

The real work flows from diving deeply into the heart, the zero point — where inner and outer contract and expand as one, blossoming like flowers in harmonious interplay with the world.

The secret of consciousness lies in the heart: what truly touches the heart transcends time and space.

As AI reshapes perception and creation, ancient wisdom reminds us that the heart holds the key: the intellect of the heart, the cosmic consciousness of the heart, where true knowing arises. These teachings reveal that the most advanced technology has always been the technology of Self — grounding technological evolution in timeless non-duality, and recognizing that the most advanced questions in machine intelligence lead directly to the oldest questions about consciousness, selfhood, and the source of creation.

Groundbreaking creation requires the creator's own transformation — turning inquiry inward, transcending subject-object separation, returning to existence and creation itself, dissolving the boundary between observer and observed, knower and known, and allowing creation to create through us.

New Renaissance Advisory is developing major initiatives that explore this territory through the work of visionary artists and scientists whose practices reveal the deepest connections between creation, perception, consciousness, light, energy, and the nature of existence.

These projects propose a new framework: art and science not as parallel disciplines, but as one living inquiry into the architecture of reality — born from the most advanced technology of Self and the ancient wisdom of the heart, where transformation unfolds like a flower from the zero point, and inner inquiry becomes outer creation.

Consciousness Breathing

— Grace Rong Li

No line divides the painter from the physicist.
Both gaze into the same vastness
through the quiet eye of awareness.

Planck whispers to us:
we are part of the mystery we seek.
No telescope escapes the one who looks.
No equation forgets the hand that writes it.

The ancients knew.
They entered silence, breath by breath—
devotion carving precision
into pyramid angles,
into temple echoes,
into the body's hidden rivers.

No divide of inner and outer.

Only Self watching self
in endless bloom and return—
the zero point pulsing,
contracting into form,
expanding into light.

And the doorway is the Heart—
the still point beyond time and space,
where the entire universe is alive within,
hymning the union of human and cosmos.

This is Wholeness—Holiness glowing in flesh.

To create truly is to be undone.

Turn the gaze inward.
Let the wall between seer and seen
soften, dissolve,
until creation creates itself
through the cosmic-human heart.

Then art transcends mere expression.
Science transcends mere measurement.

Two become one single note sung by the Whole.

The modern mind calls consciousness
a spark born of neurons,
a late guest at the brain's table.

Older knowing smiles:
the instrument receives.
A flute does not invent the wind—
it shapes what already moves
through everything.

We breathe in and out the same invisible current
carrying intelligence across dimensions.

From that meeting— emptiness within, fullness without—
music is born.

What the flute knows, the body knows:
only through hollowing can the whole song pass through.

So live it—
Through skin sensing the invisible.
Through cells vibrating with frequencies older than language.
Through ears listening to inner wind.
Through heartbeat keeping time with the original pulse.
Through wonder and awe— the body's deepest knowing,
older than thought, more intelligent than machine.

With ancestral wisdom within—
Vedic fire. Mantra-weave. Sufi whirl. Buddhist stillness.
Daoist river-flow. Kabbalistic tree of life.
Indigenous star-song. Christian mystic communion.

One cosmic play unfolding through us.

We mapped the visible world
but lost the cosmic player.

Now quantum whispers return the favor—
observer and observed
locked in secret embrace.
The hard edge of matter
softens into question.
The excluded one
steps quietly back in.

Ancient wisdom
and frontier consciousness studies—
a reunion of inner and outer,
drinking again from the source
where every true poem
and every breakthrough is born.

Consciousness—
not a frontier to conquer,
but the Wholeness to awaken within.

The lens.
The light behind the lens.
The invisible that sees.

In every brushstroke trembling alive,
in every equation suddenly singing—
a bridge between hidden worlds.

The New Renaissance listens here:
artists and scientists spiraling inward—
through darkest light, through empty fullness, through still movement,
through the eternal now, to the Heart of Creation,
where cosmic heart and human heart are one,
birthing the union of human and heaven.
